Recognizing and Remembering

July 13, 1863, the enslaved people of Natchez began their final push from the oppression of slavery with the arrival of USCT soldiers in the city.

July 13, 2024, Commemorate the 161st Anniversary of Civil War’s Emancipation Proclamation Freedom From Chattel Slavery That Happened in Natchez Mississippi and Beyond. It is a day on which we the citizens of the Natchez District and the surrounding area give our thanks to those who dedicated their lives to make the road to freedom more reachable to the disenfranchised and maltreated Men, Women, and children held by horrors of the institution of Slavery.

The Burden of Understanding

While the burden of understanding this commemorative is solely on the individual, the knowledge of the contribution and sacrifices of these men play a very significant role in the survival and continued success of this City during a period of destruction throughout the South. For the disenfranchised men, women, and children suffering under the horrors and confinement of the institution of Slavery, it marked the beginning of Freedom and the struggle to maintain a way of life that had been deprived of them.

The making of this commemorative is provided by the research and ongoing commitment of our local Historian Award Winner, Ser Seshsh Ab Heter-C. M.
